PREAH NEANG SBEK LEA (DONKEY-SKIN PRINCESS)

Once upon a time, there a king who had the most power among the other kings. Many countries asked to be under his control so his country was peaceful. The king had awife and a daughter. The queen was not only the most beautiful woman in the country, but she was also reserved and kind. As for the princess, she was as beautiful, reserved and kind as her mother. The king raised many horses and a donkey. He was very fond of that donkey.

One day, the queen had fallen serious sick and no doctor could cure her. At last, the queen told her husband"My dear! I might not live any longer. When I die, and if you want to marry a new wife, you ought to marry any girl that is more beautiful and reserved than me." In fact, the queen knew that she was the most beautiful girl so the king could not marry again. When the king heard that he was frightened and cried loudly and promised to follow the queen for everything. Later the queen passed away.

Many months later, the king remembered the queen's advice so he felt to marry a new wife.

The king sent his officials to seek pretty woman who was more reserved and beautiful than his late wife. The officials tried to look for the pretty woman everywhere inthe royal palace or in the country as well as in the neighboring countries, but no one was more beautiful than the former queen was. Later, a knight came to tell the king, "Your majesty! I see a girl who is more reserved and beautiful than the former queen." The king asked rapidly, "Who is she? Where is she?" The knight replied to the king that she was your daughter.

It was really no compassion. The king, who had been falling in love, certainly wished to marry his natural daughter. After the princess received the news, she cried all day and night. She was full of sorrow so she went off to meet her aunt. "I know all your matter. Everything will get better," said the aunt. "Your father's conduct is very shameful," She added.

The aunt told theprincess, "you have to go back to meet your father and ask for the dress with the diamonds and the dress must be glitter like the sun. You promised to marry, unless the dress shines like the sun and changes the colors according to the time." The princess went back and told her father the same as her aunt's advice. Immediately, the king ordered the tailors to make the wonderful dress as soon as possible as requested by his daughter. Next day, the wonderful dress was already made.

When the princess saw the dress, she did not find any excuses / to say to her father, so she went off to see her aunt again. The aunt held the princess’s hand and said, “From the beginning, your father is very fond of the donkey, so you have to ask for its skin. I think that your father dare not kill it.”

The princess requested her father for the donkey's skin as her aunt told again. The king replied that he would kill the donkey after listening to his daughter. It was unexpected that because of love the king dare do everything that he has never done before. In order to fulfill his daughter's demand, he ordered his servants to kill his beloved donkey.

Only when she saw the donkey's skin, the princess burst into tears with despair and went to meet her aunt again. Her aunt told her: "You cannot live here any longer. You have to leave her." The aunt gave the princess the package of clothes and some jewelry and told her: "When you take the donkey's skin to cover your body, nobody can remember you." After preparation, the princess said good-bye to her aunt with sorrow.

On that say, the king was ready to get married; suddenly a knight came to tell: "Your majesty! The princess has already run away." When the king heard that, he was hopeless and felt pitiful for his missing daughter. He quickly gave the orders to his servants and knights to look for his daughter everywhere in the country and he promised not to marry his daughter any longer.

Meanwhile, the princess was travelingvery fast. Her beautiful face was full ofdirt and she looked like the tramperwho wandered without specificdestination until she left her country. Finally, she arrived at a farm that waslooking for a worker. Although shewore well-worn clothes or coved herbody with donkey's skin; her spiritwas still the heart of the princess. All the workers called her “The donkey skin girl”.

In fact, the farm that the princess was hiding belonged to a king whose country was one of her father's neighboring countries. That king had a very handsome son. After coming back from hunting, the prince usually called in to visit and relax at the farm.

One day, the donkey skin girl saw the prince in the farm; she fell in love with the prince alone. One day after working, she hid quietly to try her dress in the room alone in order to relieve from the suffering. When the prince was visiting the farm, he accidentally glanced at her in the glittering dress. The prince looked at her with his feeling floating in the air and he thought himself: "Who is she? Where is she from? How pretty? How lovely?

Since he had seen the princess, the prince often sat alone and thought of her all the time. The prince wanted to eat a cake made by the princess herself. His mother begged him: "You can eat whatever, but I don't want you to eat the cake made by the donkey skin girl because she is very ugly."

Seeing that her son had been so upset that he did not eat anything, the prince's mother finally decided to ask the donkey skin girl to make cake for her son. After receiving the order from the queen, the donkey skin girl hurried up taking a bath. She cleaned her hands and took sugar, flour, salt, eggs and butter to the kitchen in order to make cake. When the cake was already made, it smelt pleasantly so she took it to the prince.

When the prince was eating; he saw a ring in the cake. Soon after, he got the ring, the prince felt very happy so he asked his parents to get married to the donkey skin girl. However, his parents did not agree with him on the wedding. The king and queen announced for the pretty girls everywhere, including the daughters of the high-ranking officials and the princesses from many countries, for their son to select to get married. Nevertheless, the prince was not fond of any girls. He hid himself in the royal residence. He had neither eaten nor gone out for many days until he fell sick. His parents felt pitiful for their son so they called the donkey skin girl to come into the palace. After the prince met her, his disease was disappeared at once.

On the wedding day, the donkey skin princess looked pretty. Her round eyes were very bright and her smile was the most beautiful. On that occasion, the prince's parents invited all the kings from the neighboring countries, including the princess's father, to attend the wedding ceremony. When seeing his daughter, the king hurried up to embrace his daughter with love and compassion. He apologized for his misconducts on his daughter.
