PREAH CHAN KORUP

Preah Chan Korup was the only one son of Preah Bat Promatoat who ruled over the cityof Pireannsey. When Preah Chan Korup had grown up, Preah Bat Promatoat wanted to crown him King ofthe city on his behalf. However, due to the reason that there must be a brave king to succeed, Preah Bat Promatoat decided to send Preah Chan Korup out of the palace to study the magical skills.

Preah Chan Korup went to study with a hermit who lived in a big mountain covered with forests. The little king tried his best to study all the magic without forgetting a word or a phrase. After he could perform all magical power, he wanted to return to his city. So, he told the hermit, “Wise old man! I want to return to my city.” The hermit felt that Preah Chan Korup had come to study with him for long time enough, so he asked, “Preah Chan Korup! How are the magic lessons that I have taught you? Could you perform them before you leave me?”

Preah Chan Korup started by reminding his teacher's gratitude and performed other magic like hiding magic, and physical separating magic. Then he asked the hermit, "Am I able to use it effectively?" "Yes," the hermit replied, "I see that you are strong and clever enough. You can return to your city." The hermit then entered his hut and took a feather of peacock to conjure up a beautiful virgin girl. He named her Mara. Then he put her into a small pot. The hermit then gave a white bow, a sword and the pot to Preah Chan Korup as gifts. He gave successful blessing to Preah Chan Korup and told him not to open the pot until he reached the city safely.

Stop talking the above story a while, and moving to talk about a lower world, it was the Naga world. In this world, there was a tremor for no reason. The king of Naga invited an astrologist to predict what would happen. The astrologist pulled his slate and calculated by his formula then predicted, "His majesty! This problem is very vital. It is only you that could settle it and you have to solve it promptly. Based on my calculation, this trouble had been the result of your youngest daughter's bad deed from the previous life, and this deed is involved with human in the earth world. That's why there is such chaos." The king of Naga listened cautiously and then sadly asked the astrologist, "How should we deal with it?" The astrologist replied, "There is only one way. That's you have to erect a one-pillar castle in the human world for her to live, but don't forget to inscribe the words reading "Order of the daughter of the King of Naga! If any man can climb up this castle, he will be her husband." If you do like this, then your daughter soon will be free from bad deed of her previous life. The king of Nag a brought his daughter to the human world; then he conjured up a large castle decorated very beautifully like a luxurious court. Also, the king of Nag a sent some servants of serpent dragons and giants to guard and take care of her and made an inscription on the castle as told by the astrologists. The king of Nag a named his daughter, Muchalin, and came up to the human world to visit her once a year. Muchalin lived in the beautiful castle for many years, never leaving until she had grown up.

When traveling alone in the middle of the quiet jungle, Preah Chan reached a big tree and had a rest. The price was wondering about the little pot that the hermit had given him. He was so curious that he could not bear any more and opened it. Suddenly a beautiful girl like a fairy came out ofthe pot, standing in front of him. "Who are you?" asked the prince, "Why are you here? Are you a ghost or demon?" Mara, who was from the pot, answered, "I am neither a ghost nor a demon. I am the person who has been put in the pot by the hermit. Now you open the pot, so I must come out to serve you. My name is Mara. Please accept me." When Preah Chan Korup was aware of the truth, he was fond of her very much. They both fell in love with each other. The prince promised to marry her when they arrived in the Royal Palace.

As traveling through the forest, Preah Chan Korup and Mara came across a band of thieves. When the thief leader saw Mara, he was sexually attracted by her beauty. He said that he would demand Mara to be his wife. Then, he ordered his subordinates to waylay Preah Chan Korup. The prince talked to the thief leader politely, but he refused to leave; instead, he threatened to abduct Mara. Because of his love for Mara, Preah Chan Korup fearlessly defended her against the thieves and therefore, the fighting broke out. The prince used his magical skills so wonderful that the chief leader's subordinates ran away for their lives. The thief leader did not agree to be defeated; he stayed to fight against Preah Chan Korup to the last. Finally, the thief leader requested to fight with fists. Preah Chan Korup agreed and passed his sword to Mara.

While Preah Chan Korup and the thief leader were seriously wrestling, the prince forced the thief leader to the ground and told Mara to hand him the sword. Mara thought the thief leader was in love with her so much that he risked his life to get her. Therefore, she passed the handle of sword to the thief leader. As soon as the thief got the sword, he thrust it into Preah ChanKorup's chest. “Mara,my darling! Why you passed the blade to me and the handle to him?”Preah Chan Korup saidpainfully. Preah Chan Korup was disappointed with the girl who he loved as his life but shebetrayed him and also had a pain in his chest, and then he soon passed away.

Meanwhile, Indra felt uncomfortable in his heart. He became anxious, not knowing what had happened. He opened his magic eyes to look at the earth, seeing Preah Chan Korup lying dead in the middle of the forest. Feeling pity for him, Indra came down to the earth and used magic water to save his life. Preah Chan Korup was conscious and knelt down to thank Indra for rescuing his life. Indra reminded Preah Chan Korup of not respecting the hermit's words. Indra said to Preah Chan Korup, "From now on, if you look for a wife, go to find Princess Muchalin, a daughter of the king of the neak (serpents), who was living in a castle in the middle of forest. Saying at point, Indra disappeared immediately. Preah Chan Korup, after listening to this advice, felt remorseful for his mistake and then continued his journey.

As for Mara, the sin she had committed came down on her because the thief leader was thinking to himself, "I shouldn't trust this lady, since Preah Chan Korup is handsome and his magical skill is so wonderful, still she betrayed him; how am I? I am only a thief leader; I will be harmed one day by her." Thinking so, the thief waited till Mara was overslept, then he ran away. When Mara woke up, she did not see the thief leader. She tried to look for him high and low, but did not find him at all. She wept and wailed looking for her husband alone in the forest.

Indra opened his magical eyes to look down to the earth, he understood everything. Indra disguised himself as a beautiful large bird picking the roasted meat in his beak on the tree nearby. "Hay, you! Where are you going alone in the forest?" the bird said explicitly. Mara wondered about the amazing bird, who could beautifully speak human language, and therefore she replied, "I am looking for my husband!" "Who is your husband?" the bird continued. Mara told the bird what had happened and the bird tried to lure her, "Stop looking for your husband; if you love me, I will give you this delicious food and let you go with me." Then, Mara pretended to be ashamed in a womanly unfaithful manner, and decided not to seek her husband and loved the bird instead. The bird thought that this lady was not faithful, so the God conjured her into a female gibbon in the forest.

While Muchalin, the daughter of King of Naga who had lived in the beautiful castle, publicized the scripts. The travelers - the young, the old and the widowers alike, who passed by saw the note and wished to take her to be their wife, but no one could climb up to the castle. Preah Chan Korup finally arrived at this famous castle, too. He had prayed, "If Muchalin is truly my wife-to-be, may all sacred things help me meet her." Preah Chan Korup fought against Naga subordinates guarding Muchalin. Preah Chan Korup magically shot an arrow to conjure many Garudas to catch the Nagas and the giants away and then he climbed up to the castle safe and sound, while Muchalin was sleeping in her bedroom alone. Preah Chan Korup went to see everywhere in the castle until he met Muchalin finally. She was surprised and asked, "Oh, guy! Where are you from?" "Muchalin, I've been looking for you for long time," Preah Chan Korup replied. "How do you know me so clearly?" asked the princess. The prince answered, "I am Preah Chan Korup, the son of Preah Bath Pramatoat ruling over the city of Pireannsey. I come here because Indra told me that you are my wife-to-be." They both talked to each other and finally they agreed to live together as husband and wife.

Months went past, Muchalin got pregnant, while the King of Nag did not come to visit his daughter as schedule. Preah Chan Korup somehow decided to take her to see his parents. Preah Chan Korup and Muchanlin left the castle for his homeland. When they arrived in the middle of the forest, they felt exhausted, so they were a sleep under a tree. A giantess, who was looking for food, accidentally arrived there. When the giantess saw that Preah Chan Korup was handsome, she loved him at once and saw that Muchalin was beautiful, she abducted Muchalin for inquiry and hit her until she lost unconscious, leaving her alone at the seaside. Then, the giantess magically disguised herself as Muchalin and went to sleep near Preah Chan Korup. When he woke up, he told his wife about his dream that she was abducted by an angle, but the giantess comforted him and then continued their journey.

When Preah Chan Korup was traveling, a couple of mynahs were talking about Muchalin, who was abducted by the giantess. When Preah Chan Korup heard that he felt a bit suspicious, but looking at his wife, she looked as she was. He thought when he arrived at the royal palace he would ask the astrologist to predict his dream. However, under the control of the giantess’s spells, Preah Chan Korup forgot everything.

King of Nag a carne ~ to the world in order to visit his daughter. When he had just come up at edge of the sea, he saw his daughter tragically lying unconscious on the ground. He quickly went to hold her in his arms and carried her back to the lower world. The king of Nag took the holy water and sprinkled it over her body so that she could regain consciousness. After she woke up, her father asked her what had happened and decided to look after her in his world.

Preah Chan Korup and disguised Muchalin also arrived in the city of Peareanasey. He introduced his wife to his parents and they also consented to their marriage. One night, whilst Preah Chan Korup was sleeping, the giantess was so starving that she went out and returned to her original shape, catching the people for her food. Ladies-in-waiting were screamingthroughout the royal bedroom, so Preah Chan Korup woke up. He went out and was told by the ladies-in-waiting about what they had seen. The prince did not pay attention to his wife; the giantess often caught humans to eat. This did not only make the kingdom into chaos, but it also made many people suffer, die and separate from their families every day.

Many months later, Muchalin gave birth to a son, who was named Chan Livong. King of Nag a loved his grandson very much. He educated him since he was a baby until he had grown up. One day, Chan Livong came to the upper world to visit the forest. Then he met a giant, Tinsokan, who was a widower with a son. This giant threatened to kill the little prince. Then they both fought fiercely and at the end the giant was defeated and conceded to serve Chan Livong. When the little prince returned to the world of Nag a, he asked his mother about his father. Muchalin told him about her story from the beginning to the point when a giantess separated her from her husband. After hearing his mother's story, the little kid asked her to study magic so that he could look for his father. “Son!I don't want you to leave me," Muchalin said. "Mother, it won't be long. When I finish my study, Iwilliook for father and come back to meet you," her son replied. The prince kept asking for pern1ission, Muchalin agreed on his proposal. Before her son left, she took him to see his grandparents. King of Naga gave him successful blessing and ordered his servants to escort him to the seaside.

The little prince went to study magic skills with a hermit in a big forest. After finishing his study, he asked for the hermit's permission to find his father. The hermit then conjured a magic bow and arrow and a sword for him as presents and wished him success. The Giant Tinsokan flew the little boy to the city of Pireannsey. After flying for long time, Chan Livong told his servant to fly down into a wood near the city of Pireannsey for a rest. Meanwhile, Preah Chan Korup accompanied by his soldiers went to visit the wood, leaving his wife, the giantess, in the royal palace. Sightseeing the scenery of the wood, he came across Chan livong and the giant, his servant, who had disguised himself as a man. Preah Chan Korup thought that this little boy looked very handsome and seemed a magically strong boy. He felt strange, always thinking about that boy. Preah Chan Korup asked his servant to invite the boy up to see him. When the boy arrived, he asked, "What's your name? Who's your parent? His majesty," Chan Livong answered, "I am Chan Livong. My mother is Muchalin, daughter of king of Naga; and father, Preah Chan korup, the son of Promatoat who ruled over the city of Pireannsey. Preah Chan Korup was very surprised by these words. "Where's your mother?" he asked, "What are you doing here in the middle of wood?" The boy replied, "My mother is now in the Kingdom of Naga, while I am looking for my father."

With excitement and anxiousness, Preah Chan Korup rushed to embrace Chan Livong. Then he took his son to the city at once. Chan Livongmet false Muchalin and blamed her for everything that she had committed. The giantess could not stand for this blaming and therefore they both made the fighting. Chan Livongguaranteed to settle the problem. He took out a crystal ball of serpent and projected its light onto the disguised Muchalin's face; As soon as the light reflected on her face, she became to her original shape. This surprised everybody. The giantess was so furious that she intended to destroy the city to ashes. The giantess performed the fire magic to bum Chan livong, but the fire could not harm him at all. Not waiting, Chan Livongtook out his bow and arrow, recalling themaster's merits and shot at the giantess's chest to death immediately.

Chan Livong took his father to the world of Nag a to see his mother and grandparents. When they were reuniting, they wept together and told the stories why they were separated from each other. Afterwards, King of Naga arranged the huge marriage celebration between Muchalin and Preah Chan Korup and the procession to escort them back to rule over the city of Pireannsey where they lived happily ever after.
