PREAH SOTHUN AND NEANG KEO MONOREA

There was a saying that there was a king whose name was King Atichakvong, who a wife had named Queen Chantea Devy, reigning over the Kingdom of Oudor Bagnchal. The king had a son named Prince Sothun who had good personality, which made his parents like him very much. After finishing his study of all magic, Prince Sothun returned home. His parents invited many pretty girls in order for their son to select one for wife. But Prince Sothun did not love anyone of them. The king's Brahman priest also allowed his daughter to be a concubine for the prince, but he was not interested in her at all.

At the west of Oudor Bangchal City, there was a large clear-watered pon8 with many small and big plants growing along its edge, where it was the comfortable and convenient shelter for the King of Nagas. The villagers always went there to pray for the rain every year; therefore, the villagers in Oudor Bangchal country produced plenty of rice and had never suffered from starvation. One day one of Prince Sothun's hunters went hunting in the Himalaya forest and then accidentally arrived at the rectangular pond full of four-color plants such as Chranieng (kind of tree) growing around the pond, intending to beg for a rope for King of Nagas. Suddenly, he saw seven Kinoreys (fairies), daughters of King Preah Bat Tommakreach in the kingdom of Kaylas in Himalaya Mountain, came to swim in the pond happily. Having got the rope from the King of Nagas, he peeped at the seven fairies nearby.

While the seven fairies were swimming happily, the hunter threw the rope over all of them, but only Pricness Keo Monorea was tired by the rope. Seeing this situation, the other fairies were frightened and flew out into the sky in order to tell their parents what had happened.

The hunter, then, took Keo Monorea to King Sothun. As soon as the prince saw Keo Monorea, he fell passionately in love with her and asked her to be his wife. His parents were also fond of her.

One day, Pagnchak Kream which was colonized by the Oudor Banhchal, had a rebellion. King Atichakvong ordered his soldiers to fight against the enemy, but could not win. Thus the king went to discuss with the Brahma priest. The priest said, "Your Majesty, we will win if you send the prince to war, because he is very strong." Then, King Atichakong allowed his son and soldiers to make war against the enemies. One night, King Atichakvong dreamed of one strange thing that he saw his intestine come out of his abdomen and it tied up three rounds the central continent of the seven Continents surrounding Mount Meru and then returned to his abdomen. As soon as he woke up, the king was so shocked that he called the Brahma priest to tell what his dream was. "We must invite the astrologist to make a prediction, your majesty!" said the Brahma priest. Due to his previous dissatisfaction with Prince Sothun because he refused to love his daughter, the Brahma priest intended to force Princess Keo Monorea out of the Kingdom. The Brahma priest persuaded the astrologist to seek whatever he could to put the prince's wife to death. In return, he would award that astrologist for many Damloengs of gold. (Damloeng is a Khmer measurement. 20 unitsare equal to 1 kilogram of gold.)

"The dream was absolutely bad and can harm your life," said the astrologist, "because there was a fairy living on our earth and this will be very harmful to you, unless we burn her alive." The king, after hearing this, ordered an executioner to arrest Keo Monorea to be burnt alive. The princess was so scared that she asked her parent-in-law to delay her killing until her husband returned from war so that she could say goodbye to him before she was sacrificed. Though she begged for mercy, the astrologist refused to wait saying that there might be serous disaster.

At the scarified place, everything was ready, the firewood was piled and Princess Keo Monorea was tied to a stump. When seeing this situation, the queen sobbed for pitying her daughter-in-law. "Please stop weeping," said Keo Monorea, "I agree to devote my life in return for happiness for the people, but I would like to suggest for one thing." "What is it?" asked the queen. “I need my wings to be with me. Please mother fulfills my last wish," she said. Then her mother-in-law brought her the wings which Prince Sothun had hidden. After she got her wings, the princess pretended to dance and then flew high to the Himalaya forest right towards a hermitage.

The princess told the hermit about this cruelty. Then, she asked the hermit to keep her woolen cloth and ring for her husband and left such a lot of messages that her husband could reach the kingdom of Kaylas in Himalaya Mountain., After winning the war in Pagnchak Kream, Prince Sothun came back to his kingdom with his soldiers. Then he hurried up to see his wife, but he didn't find her in the chamber. He was told that Princess Keo Monorea had left the kingdom, so he was very sad. He went to his parents to ask for permission to look for his wife. He traveled towards the hermitage and the hermit gave him the woolen cloth and the ring.

The hermit told Prince Sothun the message from his wife, "She wants you to mix this medicine with magic and make it into pills and walk to the north and then you will reach a poisonous wood. Don't forget to bring along a small monkey, and eat any fruits the monkey eats. After that you will arrive at a forest of rattan, there you cover your body with the woolen cloth, and lie down onto the ground. Then an eagle will swoop down to pick you up to the other side of the sea."

"And next," the hermit added, "you will see two Nagas fighting. You take the magic pills and go through the space of the Nagas' legs and then you will see two mountains crashing, you cast a spell and pass through those mountains and you will reach the shelter of giants and water demons. Afterwards, you will get to the jungle of thatches, bamboos, reeds, thorns, mountain range, thick forest, and you meet a huge and tall giant with the height of seven palm trees. You take the magic pills to apply around an arrow, and shoot it at the chest of the giant so that you can go ahead. You will arrive at the acid stream and you have to apply the pills on your legs so that you can go on your journey. You will reach the rattan wood and in the middle of the wood there is a big tree where the eagles make their shelters. You have to hide in the feathers of eagle and you will be brought to the top of the Himalaya Mountain and there it is your wife's palace."

After Prince Sothun made his journey for 7 years, 7 months and 7 days, he coincidently saw six fairies, each carrying a golden pot to take water from a pond tobaptize Princess Monorea. When Price Sothun sawthem lifting the pots, he prayed to God in order not tomake the six fairies to lift the pots so that he could come to help. While he was helping the six fairies, he put thering into the pot as a sign for Princess Keo Monorea.

When Monorea was having a bath, somehow, the ring fell into her finger. Then she realized that her husband had arrived Himalaya Mountain. She went to tell her parents about her husband.

Prince Sothun went to see his parent-in-Iaws. His father in-law, King Tommakreach, tested the martial art, intelligence, and all abilities of Prince Sothun. He found out that Prince Sothun was really the Princess consort from previous life. He was so fond of Prince Sothun that he crowned Prince Sothun and Princess Keo Monorea to rule the Himalaya Mountain.

Later on, Prince Sothun and Keo Monorea, his parent-in-lawsas well as their retinues flew down to the earth tomeet Prince Sothun's relatives. King Atichakvong greetedhis daughter-in-law warmly and put them on the throneas his next successor since then. Afterwards, King

Atichakvong ordained himself as a hermit. As for KingTommakreach and his retinues, they all returned to Himalaya Mountain
