A long time ago, there lived a king, named Moha Vongsreach reigning in the Kingdom of Vichey. He had a wife, named Sovann Vongsa and a younger brother, named Chetvong, who was a lord. The lord Chetvong had a wife, Somontea and a daughter, named Chettavong. Afterwards, Queen Sovann Vongsa prayed to for a son. She always committed 5 percepts. Invited by the Indra, Preah Pothisatv (the Buddha-to-be) came into existence in her womb. When it was due time, she delivered a son named Chao Sovann Vong Komar. When the boy grew up, he studied all kinds of magic work and behaved perfectly to everyone. Later on, his father, Moha Vongsreach, passed away. After having cremated the king, the people and the royal officials such as Royal Brahmas requested the prince to be crowned, but he refused to accept the throne. Instead, he asked his uncle to be crowned. King Chettavong, after coming to throne, never conducted with dignity. By the way, Sovann Vong was given the position as a lord. Later on, he asked for the permission from the king to go into the forest to seek for Blessing Elephant. This seeking was not successful. He ordered the royal servants to build a shelter for him to live in the forest for several months.
At that time, in lrotha Kingdom there was a king named Yosareach. He had a beautiful 16-year-old daughter, named Ekboranei. One day she went to serve her father with her servants almost full night; then, she came back to her castle and overslept. Even after the next morning dawned and the sun rose, she did not wake up, and neither did her servants. Unfortunately, on that day the king drank so much alcohol that he was not aware that his daughter had come to serve him. He was very angry and went to his daughter's castle. Seeing that the royal servants were sleeping until the sun rose, the king cursed so loudly that the royal servants went away and hid themselves. Then, the king entered his daughter's room; the princess got up, and she apologized to him. Because of his anger, the king, then, kicked her and blamed her unfairly for many things.
At that time, since the princess was filled with deep shame and would not want to get hurt again, she went into the forest to commit suicide. She wandered for along time and then arrived at a hut of a hermit. After one year of staying with the hermit, she thought, "Since I am a woman, my living in the forest is not a good thing." So, she left the hermit for a life in a human society. "Usually, it's not safe for a woman who travels alone in the forest," thought the hermit, "and she is always in danger, so I should give her a magic sword and crystal ball." Having had these both holy objects, she left the hermit miserably. She went through the forests and mountains and then she had a rest under a big tree. While the princess was sleeping, two giants saw her and intended to eat her. The younger giant felt immense pity on the princess and wished to take her to be his wife. While they both were about to catch the princess, she woke up on the right time and wielded the magic sword. Due to the power of the magic sword, the elder giant was cut to death, and the younger ran away into the forest.
The princess traveled safe and sound in the forest and finally reached the Vichey Kingdom. At that time, the deity of the tree discovered that, with her good deeds, the princess was a good match to Prince Sovann Vong, who was living in forest to look for a Blessing Elephant. The deity transformed himself as a gold buck and ran past the prince's shelter. No sooner did Sovann Vong see the buck than he rode the horse to chase it. The buck, when reaching to the Princess Ekboranei, disappeared. When Prince Sovann Vong, saw the princess, he fell so much in love with her. He approached her, and after they both chatted about their respective backgrounds, they admitted their love to each other. Sovann Vong invited the princess to ride a horse with him escorted by the royal servants and soldiers and went back to his royal palace. They both went to salute the prince's mother and then she right away agreed to marry the princess to his son.
Talking about King Yosareach, Ekboronei's father, after sobering up, he asked the ladies-in-waiting to invite his daughter to meet him. The ladies, then, were looking for the princess high and low, but not finding her. Then, they went back and told the king tearfully what had happened exactly. Regarding Sovann Vong's uncle, as soon as he saw the Princess Ekboranei, he fell passionately in love with her; therefore, he got Lord Sovann Vong to see him and said, "Sovann Vong! Give Ekboronei to me, nephew; I will marry my daughter, Sochetra, to you." Sovann Vong replied, "My majesty! So doing is not considered culturally appropriate." The king, then, kept quiet. Later on, since the king was filled with sexual passion, he explored a way to destroy Sovann Vong by ordering that, "Sovann Vong! Now the patron deity of the kingdom is absolutely furious with you and will make Sochetra ill; only if there is a red lotus from the world of naga to offer him will he blesses her comfort, or his daughter will die and you, therefore, must look for red lotus to offer the deity."
Sovann Vong, after listening to his uncle's speech, realized that the king was cheating him in order to get his wife and therefore told the king that, "My majesty, I request you to wait, and no longer than seven months, I will bring you a red lotus from the world of naga. Then, Sovann Vong went back to his castle and told his wife about this news. Then he went to say goodbye to his mother. Knowing his mission, his mother was very angry with her younger brother, the king. So she gave blessings to her son.
Ekboranei, his beloved wife, gave him her magic sword for self-defense against any enemy. Meantime, Ekboranei was pregnant for five months and Sovann Vong asked his mother to look after his wife carefully. Lord Sovann Vong, escorted by many royal soldiers and officials, left the royal palace for the dense forest. Reaching there, he had the companions get back to the palace and went all the way on his own.
Wandering in the forest for one month, Sovann Vong arrived at a kingdom. He saw houses, markets and lots of wealth but saw no body, even an animal, live there. He entered a castle and went into every room even bedrooms. He saw a device which can be used to open and close the mechanical door. Soon, he used the device to open the door and suddenly saw an outstanding beautiful young lady. "Hello! Why are you here alone?" he said. Seeing Sovann Vong, she went out and did courtesy to him and said: "My majesty, my name's Sovann Panhcha Tevy. In this kingdom, there lives a water demoness. She lived in a Bokkaranei pond in the dense forest and if any persons or animals went into the pond to drink or bathe, she always slaughtered them. My grandfather reigned in this kingdom. One day, he went hunting in the forest. He mounted the horse and chased an animal. The animal ran very fast and disappeared at the Bokkaranei pond without anyone catching it up. The king, then, went into the pond and drank water; so the water demoness caught the king and was about to eat him, but he requested her not to eat. Instead, he begged the demoness that he would send his people to her to eat every day. So the water demoness released him. When he arrived at the royal palace, he sent the criminals to the water demoness for food each day. Later on, my grandfather passed away. Then,my father came to throne but refused to send people for the water demoness to eat, so the water demoness was so angry that she ate all people up."
The prince and the princess held a conversation romantically waiting for the arrival of the water demoness. Soon, the water demoness, a huge scary giantess, arrived ;seeing the prince and the princess, she rushed to them intending to butcher. So frightened, the princess went back into the castle. Sovann Vong was brave and ready to go into a battle against the giantess. He wielded his magic sword strongly breaking the giantess's chest. She got dead at that moment. The princess praised, and was fiercely proud of her partner. She asked the prince to cut the giantess's stomach for a magic crystal ball and stored it in fragrant water in order to magically bring back to life the skeletons of dead persons and animals. The king, royal soldiers and officials, people, and animals were all alive again. The king put Sovann Vong on the throne, but he refused because he had to continue his journey. He requested Sovann Panhcha Devy to live with her father temporarily and would come back to get her after he found red lotus from the naga world.
The prince saluted and said goodbye to the King, taking with him magic crystal ball and continuing his joumey. Later, he arrived in another kingdom; the kingdom was without people again. Preah Sovann Vong saw a princess detained in a big golden drum. Her name was Sovann Phery. She told the king about the event in her kingdom which caused quietness. She said that this was derived from an eagle which liked hunting people for feeds. In that time, the prince killed the eagle with his magic sword and cut the head of the eagle for a magic crystal ball and stored it in fragrant water. Later the prince sprayed the water onto the skeletons of dead persons and animals in order to magically bring back their lives. The King reigning over that kingdom wished to crown the prince, Sovann Vong, but he denied. He asked his father-in-Iaws to take care of his spouse and took the magic crystal ball along with him and continued his joumey for search of red lotus.
Afterwards, the prince arrived at a big pond where he rested under a tree growing nearby. He climbed up the tree looking for fruit as his food. In that time, the Naga king, Vorun Neakreach, his retinues and his daughter, Sovann Neaky, went to bathe in the pond until afternoon. Suddenly, there was a Garuda flying in the air. When it saw the nagas bathing very happily, it swooped down in order to catch them. As soon as the retinues and Sovann Neaky saw the Garuda, they were so frightened that they had to flee through the ground to their world. Only the Naga king did not escape. So seeing, the Garuda went straight to catch him. As soon as Sovann Vong saw like this, he threw his swords at the Garuda's chest leaving it passed away. The Naga king was very happy that Sovan Vong helped him. He took the princess to his naga world. He gave Red lotus and married his daughter to the princess. Preah Sovann Vong and Sovann Neaky saluted the Naga king and say goodbye to him to return to human world.
Sovann Vong and Sovann Neaky together visited the forest happily and then they both stopped to have a rest and slept under a big tree. At that time, there was a learned person coming across. Seeing that both of them sleeping, he approached to steal the sword and went away. When waking up without seeing his sword, he continued his journey fearfully. Accidentally, another garuda saw them. Sovann Neaky was so scared that she went into the earth and back to her world. Regarding Sovann Vong, after winning the battle against the garuda, he did not see the Sovann Neaky; he was terribly worried. A new family was broken up, which made Sovann Vong even more distressed. Soon, when it was known to the Indra that the learned person had stolen Sovann Vong's sword, the Indra told the learned person to return the sword to Sovann Vong; then ,he magically transformed himself as a horse, approaching Sovann Vong. "Hey, young man" said the horse to Sovann Vong.
"Where are you going to? Why are you going alone?" Sovann Vong replied, "Brother Horse! I am getting lost; I really want to go back to my kingdom." He told the horse what had happened to him and then the horse and the prince left there.
Sovann Vong mounted the horse, and the horse took him to Ratanak Vimean (a castle of treasure). Entering the castle, he saw a beautiful angel, named Ratanak, wearing fine jewelry Vimean. The angel said that she had just come from the paradise to be bom in this castle. Then, she asked Sovann Vong about being alone in the forest. He told the angel about what had happened to him, and he told other stories very sweetly. She was very enthusiastic about him. At that time, the angel and the human fell in love with each other and lived together happily in that castle. Sovann Vong inherited the divine wealth and lived merrily with the angel.
By the way, Sovann Neaky, after going through earth and reaching her naga world, went to salute her father. "Why are you coming back?" his father asked, "Where is Sovann Vong?" Sovann Neaky told her father the truth. The naga king was absolutely furious and blamed her that she was a disloyal woman to her husband. The king had her go back to her husband and if she could not find her husband, she was not allowed to return home. Again, Sovann Neaky came back to the earth to seek for her husband in the forest. Wandering everywhere in the forest for days and nights, she arrived at the castle where Sovann Vong lived. At that time, Sovann Vong was sitting at the window sill of the castle of treasure. Seeing Sovann Neaky traveling on her own, he called her. Realizing that he was her husband, Sovann Neaky was very happy. She rushed into the castle and put her arms around her husband with strong feel ing of longing to see him. Princess Sovann Neaky and Angel Rotanak Vimean loyally treated Sovann Vong as their husband with great respect.
Talking about King Chettvong Reach, he rea lly wanted Ekboranei to be his wife. He thought that Sovann Vong had left the kingdom for five months, and no news had been found about him. He might be dead in the forest, so the king got the maids to invite Ekboranei to him. "The king got my husband to naga world since the king wanted to separate him from me," she thought, after listen ing to the maids. At that time, Ekboranei told them that, "Please tell the king that I am so heavily pregnant that I cannot go to see him." At that time, she wrote a letter and kept it under her pillow, reading that, "Because I was afraid that the king forces me to marry him, I escaped to the forest in the west out of this kingdom. If you, my dear, miss me, go to see me; if not, don't." Then, she escaped from the royal palace.
On her way to the west for a few days, she arrived at a riverbank and right away had a rest under a tree. Soon, she went into labour and safely delivered a baby. After the baby was born, four giantesses, who were looking for food, saw her and the baby. They suddenly rushed to catch her. Ekboranei, reciting the magic words of the hermit, cast the spell over them. The four giantesses, then, was afraid of her power and became kind to her and the baby. The first giantess bathed the baby; the second collected the water; the third boiled water, and the fourth prepared a shelter for her. Ekboranei raised her baby boy well for a month.
Speaking of Sovann Vong, on the night that Ekboranei escaped from the palace, he had a strange dream about a crow flying toward her castle, and she was so scared that she left the castle. When he woke up, he thought that there might be something bad caused by the king; and therefore, he must go to the palace. He cannot be late. He plucked the first string of the lute to make his castle of treasure float in the sky. When he plucked the second string, the castle flew fast to get Sovann Phery. Plucking the third string, the castle flew to get Sovann Panhcha Devy and then in the air went towards Cheyvong kingdom. The castle was in the sky and in the middle of the kingdom.
As soon as all the people in the kingdom saw the castle, they were every surprised, so they went to see the rare event. Realizing that he was Sovann Vong, the royal soldiers went to tell the king Chetra Vong that, "My Majesty, the lord was coming back; he stayed in a floating castle." Seeing the floating castle had a beautiful angel, the king fell passionately in love. He climbed the stairs to the castle, intending to kill the lord who was his nephew in order to claim pretty ladies, but because ofhis greed, he was so careless that he fell off the stairs to the ground and was swallowed by the earth.
Sovann Vong was deeply shocked with the event. He went down the castle taking his four wives to see and salute his mother. Then, he asked about Ekboranei if she delivered a baby. Listening to her son's question, his mother cried and said, "On the day that Ekboranei was asked to see the king, she refused the invitation. And she escaped from the royal palace ever since. Sovann Vong was very sad. He went into her room and saw a letter under her pillow. "My wife has gone for a hide in the west of this kingdom," he uttered.
Sovann Vong came across a fisherman after his 5-day travel to the west and said, "Hey, Brother! Have you seen a pregnant woman or a woman who have just delivered a baby?" The fisherman replied, "Yesterday I saw a woman with her newborn baby at the harbor." Sovann Vong was very happy. Going ahead, he heard a baby crying and saw Ekboranei there. Ekboranei realizing that he was exact her husbandrushed to him and hugged him tightly, crying and telling him what had happened to her.
Sovann Vong carried the baby boy in his hand and told his wife about the death of his uncle. Then, they both returned to their homeland. At that time, a water demoness was attracted by Sovann Vong's beauty and soon fell paSSionately in love with him. Exploring ways to get him, the water demoness transformed herself as an old lady rowing along the river. Sovann Vong intended to cross the river. So as soon as saw an old lady rowing, he thought that she was a real old woman, so he shouted to her to ferry his family. He asked the old lady to take his family to the other side of the river. The water demoness was very happy since this was what she needed; the water demoness hurriedly beached her boat. On the boat, the old lady was sitting on the back of the boat; Ekboranei, in the middle; and her husband, on the bow.
When the boat arrived at the middle of the river, there was a big storm, and the sky was getting dark and it was also foggy. At that time, the disguised old lady pushed Queen Ekboranei into the river and transformed herself as a queen carrying the baby boy. When the weather was fine again, she, the disguised water demoness, told Sovann Vong that, "The old lady has fallen into the river, and I don't know when she fa ll. Please carry the baby, my dear! And let me row the boat to the other side of the river to avoid the next storm. Anyway, when carried by the water demoness, the baby was crying uncontrollably, so his father had to carry him. No sooner had his father carried him than he stopped crying. After pushed into the river by the water demoness, Ekboranei was rescued and safely taken by a varuna to the other side of the river. However, she dreadfully missed her son and her husband and was always crying.
Sovann Vong undoubtedly took his wife who was the water demo ness to his kingdom. They went to meet their mother. "Why do you escape from the palace without telling anyone?" the mother blamed her daughter-in-law. She then handed to carry her grandson and passed him to the water demoness. The baby boy started to cry again as if he was very scared of one thing. And therefore the grandmother was the only one who had to raise her grandson. All of his wives saluted the king and the first queen. Sovann Neaky saw the first queen - the water demoness - had different red eyes from humans; she told the other three fellows, but not her husband since she was afraid that he would not believe.
At night, the varuna whispered to Sovann Vong that, "Your wife is not Ekboranei, but the water demoness." After that the varuna told him about what had happened to her and where she was staying. When waking up, he got the royal soldiers to catch the disguised Ekboranei, tied her up and took her by a boat to the place where he had requested the old lady to ferry his family. There, Sovann Vong met Ekboranei as what he was told by the varuna. He invited Ekboranei to get into the boat, and then he used his sword to kill the water demoness and pushed the dead body into the river. Seeing her son, Ekboranei was very excited and rushed to him and carried him in her arms, while her son had a satisfied expression on his face and stopped crying. Regarding the four wives, knowing that the first queen arrived, they went to greet and salute her in traditional manners. The five queens were honest and loyal to their husband ever since.
The king ordered the chief of the army to prepared four groups of soldiers. He would leave for the kingdom of lrotha. King Sovann Vong Reach, as well as his six wives and accompanied by the soldiers, left for the lrotha Kingdom. Ekboranei told her parents thoroughly what had happened to her life. Her parents and royal re latives could not help crying when listening to the story, and they felt deeply sympathetic towards her. King Sovann Vong Reach stayed in that kingdom for one year and later on asked for his parent-in-laws, permissionto return to his kingdom and lived happily since then.
- The END -
