Since her parents passed away, Sonita became an orphan living sadly and lonely. One day, she came across the house of a wealthy old lady. She walked into the house and asked the old lady to live with her. The old lady then agreed with her imploration.
The old lady ordered Sonita to do all kinds of chores such as kitchen work, gardening and preparing the household. Though she did lots of work each day, Sonita was patient and never complained. The lady always used harsh words to the girl because whatever the girl did never satisfied the lady.
One day when Sonita was making the lady's bed, the old lady walked towards her and said loudly and roughly. "Sonita!" the old lady said, "how carelessly you work!
Here's hair all over the bed. I have never slept well because of it." The lady furiously pointed her finger at Sonita's face.
Afterwards, the old lady kicked out Sonita from her house. Then, Sonita's life was like a plant floating on water without landing.
Sonita walked from one village to another and eventually arrived at the house of husband and wife who sold farming tools to earn a living. The couple did not have any children. Sonita asked them to help sell the tools.
The couple agreed to let her live with them and promised to take care of her until she grew up. Moreover, they loved Sonita and regarded her as their daughter. In addition to her study, Sonita helped her parents do every work and sell something in the house.
Talking about the old lady, since Sonita left, she had to do every work. Because of her old age, she was very forgetful. One day, owing to her carelessness, she caused her house burn down. She became homeless, lost wealth and lived independently. Feeling hopeless and having no choice in her life, she became a beggar.
One evening, the old day wandered and arrived at the house of the farmers whom she lived with. She talked to Sonita in a begging manner. Recognizing the old lady, Sonita said to her politely and gave her food. Seeing that the lady was very old and that it was getting dark, Sonita asked for permission from her parents to let the old lady stay overnight. The parents agreed to their daughter's request without saying anything.
"Grandma, Sonita said to the old lady, "my house has little space because it is loaded with lots of farming tools." The old lady replied, "Granddaughter! Let me stay in this storage room. It's much better than sleeping on the pavement." Sonita said, "Up to you, grandma." Then they went to bed respectively.
Next morning, Sonita prepared for the sale as she usually did. "Could you sleep last night?" Sonita asked the old lady. "Yes. I slept very well, granddaughter," the old lady replied. "Thank you very much for your kindness and generosity."
Sonita was quite amazed: previously the old lady had always said she couldn't sleep with only few wisps of hair. Why could she sleep well on such cattle-tying strings? However, Sonita was not angry with the old lady because she thought that this lady used to nourish her, so she asked for permission from her parents to permit the old lady to live in the house because she thought that the lady was getting old.
