PRINCESS CHAMPA THONG

Once upon a time there was a princess of a king named Champa-thong. One day, she asked her parents to allow her to go swimming in a river with her maids.

While joyfully swimming in the river with her maids, the princess suddenly spotted a crocodile egg and a three-color tabby on a nearby river bank. Princess Champa-thong brought along the cat and the egg to the palace and told her father.

The king summoned all senior officials to look at the egg, and they identified it as a real crocodile egg. He ordered the egg to be dumped and allowed only the three-color cat to be kept. But Princess Champa-thong begged her father to dispose of the egg only after it hatched in order to avoid any sinful act.

When the egg hatched, Princess Champa-thong agreed to have the hatchling disposed in a river. Later the hatchling grew up to become a ferocious reptile which killed people as its food.

One day, a villager begged the crocodile for mercy and would be willing to do what he was told to. The crocodile accepted the plea and asked him to tell Pri ncess Champa-thong that only after she came and offered herself as food would it stop eating the villagers.

The subjects passed the message to the king. The news reached Princess Champa-thong. She told her father that she was willing to meet the crocodile's demand so as to prevent the beast from doing any more harm to the people. The three-color cat, which was sent by the angel together with the crocodile, was supposed to be the companion and the protector of Princess Champa-thong.

Having learned about the news, the cat then turned itself into beautiful lass and went to see the crocodile in order to prevent it from making the move. The crocodile, for its part, made himself a handsome lad to court the three-color cat. The cat was not successful so it scratched the crocodile, and they separated.

Princess Champa-thong with the cat in her arms sits on a raft which drifted in the river, offering herself as food for the crocodile. Having spotted the princess, the crocodile swam toward her. When it was about to swallow the princess, there suddenly appeared an angel who used magic spell to cause the crocodile to vanish.

The three-color tabby turned itself into a young woman who named herself Vila. Vila and princess Champa-thong went on shore and returned to the castle. A giant seized Princess Champa-thong and Ms. Vila and took care of the two like daughters at his kingdom.

One day, Princess Champa-thong and Ms. Vila asked her god father, the Giant, to allow them to take a stroll in the forest. There they met a prince of another king, named Chey-chet. The two fell in love with each other. After being persuaded by Prince Chey-chet, Princess Champa-thong agreed to give her love. She told Prince Chey-chet to prepare dowries for the traditional engagement.
